Computer Technology for Students promotional post

Welcome back! We are officially in the the thick of summer and we hope you’re all enjoying the warm weather. We posted a new video to our YouTube channel. Watch How Requesting Tech Works to learn more about how requesting tech works at BC Tech.

As always, we’d like to thank all of our wonderful donors. We would like to highlight a big donation from one of our largest corporate donors: TELUS. Thanks to TELUS’s donation, we are one step closer to closing the digital divide and delaying electronics from entering the recycling stream.

Back in April, we launched our Meet our Team series where we introduced you to our incredible Executive Director: Mary-Em Waddington. This month I had the pleasure of sitting down with our technical supervisor: Robert Nguyen. Rob is also in charge of Client Services, so if you've ever called to check up on an order or popped by our workshop for pick-up, you've probably met him already!

Meet Our Team

Technical Supervisor: Robert Nguyen

What is your role at BC Tech and what do you do on a daily basis?

My official role at BC Tech is Technical Supervisor but my responsibilities have evolved into much more than that. I do everything from customer service to order entries. I also make sure that our technicians are doing their job and are provided the tools to do their job to the best of their ability.

Tell me about your past experiences that prepared you for working at BC Tech?

I was always good with computers from a young age. I played on my computer a lot and also tinkered with computer parts. I would periodically upgrade computers to keep my computer up to date so that it could support the games that I was playing. I did not work in the IT industry before joining BC Tech, but I worked at a number of different companies. Some of these jobs were making commercial windows, construction, and doing inventory at the airport.

What do you like about working at BC Tech?

I like the opportunity to do good for the communities that we serve, helping families that otherwise could not afford computers to get their hands on one. I like that we have rotations of interns every few months, giving me the opportunity to interact with different people. Finally, we have a great team of wonderful people, allowing us to support individuals all around the province.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

I enjoy spending time with my family, cycling around the city, picnicking at the beach, and hanging out with friends.

Do you have any interesting fun facts?

I shiver up and get weak in my fingers when thinking about climbing high off the ground.

What do you consider to be good customer service?

Treating customers with respect while staying calm and composed.

What will be the biggest challenge for BC Tech going into 2022?

Maintaining the level of distribution as more and more people are requesting mobile devices.

What’s something that has surprised you about your chosen career path?

Considering how much we use computers in our daily lives, a large number of people still do not know how one works.

What’s the best piece of professional advice that you’ve ever received?

Don’t get scammed into getting scammed.
