Sustainability

Why should I donate a computer to be reused instead of recycling it?

It's time we share the benefits that reusing has over recycling!

We protect the environment from electronic waste through responsible materials management in line with the principles of sustainable development. We employ a balanced use of all three components of sound environmental practice: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. However, these three practices are not equal.

e waste hierarchy of recycling and refurbishing

Waste Hierarchy - top to bottom is most sustainable to least

In the waste hierarchy, the top levels produce the least amount of waste and are therefore more sustainable. As you can see, “Reuse” is above “Recycle”, and for good reason.

Reusing is more sustainable than recycling because it saves the energy that comes with having to dismantle and re-manufacture parts and products.

Equipment donated to BC Tech often doubles its useful life, significantly eliminating e-waste in landfills, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, preserving natural resources, and conserving more energy than recycling prematurely!

Technology will eventually be recycled, but let's delay its trip there when it can be used by the community first

 Technology will eventually be recycled, but let's delay its trip there when it can be used by the community first.

We also reduce the number of new computers that need to be produced to meet the needs of BC residents by providing good, used computers to our clients.

Ensuring a reduction in manufacturing is vital for environmental sustainability and the protection of people and the planet. The manufacturing process is a heavy investment of minerals, water, and energy.

The manufacturing of a computer and its screen takes at least:

  • 240 kg (530 pounds) of fossil fuels;

  • 22 kg (48 pounds) of chemicals;

  • 5 tons of water.

Our Sustainability Practices

Transportation

We use Eeko Couriers because of their commitment to being sustainable by using hybrid cars and trucks for deliveries. This reduces transportation CO2 emissions by over 50%. We encourage clients to make bulk orders to minimize the number of different shipments sent to one client.

Energy

We take steps to ensure that our operations are as energy efficient where possible. We take steps like keeping the HVAC system clean, using LED lighting, using a programmable thermostat, and keeping our unused lights off. Our internal building renovations were also done to silver LEED standards.

Waste

BC Tech minimizes our footprint by packaging our shipments in corrugated paper products, not plastic wrap, and reusing packaging. All of our office furniture (desks, chairs, cabinets) are second-hand, and our building renovations used recycled steel, sustainable paints, and flooring.

Culture

We complete Climate Smart training and use reduction strategies in our everyday practices. We are a participating member of the Recycling Council of BC to ensure our active involvement in provincial action. Staff are also encouraged to use transit or use carpooling options.
