Monthly Update - December 2023

Happy New Year! We hope you and yours had a great holiday. We took a much-needed break here at BC Tech, but we’re back and ready to rock and roll and get some technology requests packed and out the door!

December is usually a quiet month for us since we shut down shop for the last couple weeks of the month, but we were still able to get 372 computers into the hands of clients before the holiday break. Thanks to our awesome team of technicians for your hard work.

We also hosted a Featured Friday Garage Sale to close out the month. As always, it was lovely to see so many of our clients face to face and get a chance to talk to you all about how tech has made an impact within your organizations. We will do many more of these events in the future so be sure to stay tuned for the next one. Typically, we hold them near the end of each quarter.

Our friends at Founding Peoples Support Society and KC Society hosted a Christmas Hamper where they gave laptops from BC Tech to low-income families. We were happy to help spread some holiday cheer! Check out the recap here.

John P was a part-time intern with us for over a year and finished his internship in December. He refurbished over 500 computers during his time with us and we are sad to see him go. We look forward to seeing what he does in the future! Best of luck, John!

It was a very special treat to return to the office to see a generous cash donation from the Merrifield Family Foundation. Thank you to the Merrifield family for continuing to support BC Tech for Learning and our mission! If you would like to make a cash donation to BC Tech you can do so here.

Finally, we’d like to introduce you to another member of our team! Aaron takes care of all things inventory management and technical support. If you ever need to call us for hardware support on requested technology, he’s the guy you’ll chat with.

Meet Our Team

Inventory Manager / Technical Support Lead: Aaron Yaremus

What is your role at BC Tech and what do you do on a daily basis?

I am the Inventory Manager & Technical Support Lead. My usual day consists of wiping hard drives, triaging and sorting donated inventory, assisting people with tech issues, and helping resolve other technical problems.

Tell me about your previous roles and experiences prior to coming to BC Tech.

I did a work placement for 2 months at the Manitoba branch of Computers for Schools. This included deploying Windows, cloning hard drives, and tearing down computers and laptops.

I worked as a cashier at Safeway for 4 years while I studied computers and network administration & network security at BCIT.

What do you like about working at BC Tech?

I get to work with lots of different technology and find solutions to lots of different problems every day. There is never a dull moment!

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

Playing video games and relaxing.

Do you have any interesting fun facts?

Only upgrade your phone every 4-5 years, this way you get the most out of the new battery and the newer technology in the phone.

Do you have a quick tech tip for us?

When you need to step away from the computer for a minute or 2, press the Win + L keys to lock the computer, so no one else can access your data.

What’s the best piece of professional advice you ever received?

Stay calm, think about the problem, think about possible solutions, and use the process of elimination to find the best solution.

Your Donations Matter.
